What Is Guest Blogging By Ann Smarty – An Interview
Ann Smarty the founder myblogguest.com, one of the most popular guest blogging platforms around today. Ann has been kind enough to take time out and answer some questions about her experience in the field of guest blogging.
1. Could you please tell us about yourself and about MyBlogGuest?
I entered the Internet Marketing field as an SEO. It was a coincidence that I got in the field. A lucky coincidence. I got so excited about what I was doing that I couldn’t stop. I blog on search and social media marketing here: SEOsmarty.com. I found blogging exciting and soon it turned into a major part of my business.
My most recent independent project is MyBlogGuest.com which is a site dedicated to linking guest bloggers and blog owners together so both parties can benefit from guest blogging.
2. How did you get started in Blogging and especially associated yourself with Guest Blogging?
As soon as my name got some recognition, I started to get various invitations to guest blog. I quickly realized the power of the concept: that’s a rare model when everyone wins. The blog owner gets free great content (and possibly some solid help in promoting it) and the guest author gets free exposure to new audiences and niches.
In fact, I blogged about how guest blogging had changed my life and how one guest post had made a difference – so I guess I am a good illustration of the power of guest bloggers.
While seeing how great the whole model is, I couldn’t help but noticing that there’s no good platform to somehow organize and scale it. That’s how the idea of MyBlogGuest was born!
3. There are many rewards of Guest Blogging, from building awareness and traffic online, what has been the most rewarding aspect of this journey for you so far?
I think I have partially answered this question above while linking to my personal case study. I fact, my best gain was my personal brand.
I got heard and recognized. Everything else (clients, the ability to create, sponsor and promote personal projects, etc.) came as the result of that recognition and the contacts I built, again, through guest blogging.
4. Your currently involved in many online activates, like managing your own blog SeoSmarty.com, running MyBlogGuest , editor of SEJ, etc, how do you manage all this?
I am also a mom of a two-year-old girl – and raising her is the hardest one of my daily tasks 🙂
How do I manage? I don’t think I am any different from other busy people: I am very organized, I have to sacrifice on many things (like enough free time with my whole family) and I have to limit time for sleep and rest – that’s it!
Besides that, I am lucky to be control freak – that’s just my inherent trait, I just have it. I need to have everything done in advance – this helps a lot!
5. What advice would you give to someone looking to setup and grow their blog, are there any tips and guidelines that you would personally recommend from your experience?
Again, nothing profoundly new: just be patient. I’ve been building my career online for like 4 years now (I guess) and sometimes I think that things could get quicker, that I am not moving forward, that my projects are stagnant, etc…
But it always turns out that I just needed to work patiently. You’ll always achieve anything you plan provided you have the patience to wait and the persistence to work hard.
6. Guest blogging is becoming huge online, more and more bloggers and even business owners are adapting to guest blogging, how do you see this developing over the next 12 months, and what should one look out for?
As the one who is directly involved in guest blogging (with one major project relying on it), I prefer not to make predictions (as I am Russian and superstitious).
I want to see more people and businesses take it seriously. I hope it won’t turn into the article marketing (the concept of which is now too overused and abused). At least, within MyBlogGuest, we’ll be doing our best to keep the purity and the beauty of the concept.
7. Social media and Guest blogging go hand in hand, what is your opinion on the SEO benefits of these both?
I try not to talk about guest blogging (as well as about social media) in terms of SEO. As much as I love SEO (being a professional one), I do realize it spoils good pure concepts.
The only proven way to build a website which will do well in natural search and social media sites is to provide high-quality content and work hard. I am not aware of any other way (I assume there might be one though).
8. When you first started, how did you get users to your site, and build your presence online?
You guess it right… Via guest blogging!
Seriously, before guest blogging I tried social media. And I learned it fast. I even started to think I was getting popular. But my many contacts did not result in higher traffic or better conversions.
People were not taking me seriously until I positioned myself as an expert via guest blogging.
10. What should people keep in mind when they start with guest blogging?
Guest blogging only only works if you are willing to commit. Guest blogging is networking. Don’t try to merely build links with it: you’ll miss the greatest benefits.
When starting, one should clearly understand what guest blogging is NOT. Don’t expect fast results, focus on long-term benefits (which is a stronger brand and larger following).
The moment you start looking for easy ways, you fail to provide quality and you get rejected and frustrated. Guest blogging is a unique tactic, it’s a win-win situation for both sides involved but it only works if both parties do their best.
Just get persistent and patient… and sincere – and it will work.
11. Are there any other web sites related to guest blogging you read regularly or resources you would recommend?
BloggingPro and BlogHerald are two great blogging resources (and both are MyBlogGuest partners). FamousBloggers is a newer platform with strong guest blogging community – there’s a lot to learn from those people.
